Spring Flowers

These flowertubs outside the Town Hall opposite the market are dated 1997 but the flowers are fresh.

I'd tell you what these flowers are called but I'm botanically-challenged so all I can do is let you appreciate their colours.

There are more flowers including some dwarf daffodils in the window boxes on the Town Hall itself. See Hyde Daily Photo.

Weekend Reflections:
Peak Forest Canal

Last week I showed here a photograph of Bridge #8 on the Peak Forest Canal.

Today's view is the opposite one taken from the bridge looking South down the Canal towards Woodley. Even though it was sunny there were still some pieces of ice on less sheltered parts.

You can see the view looking North from the bridge on Hyde Daily Photograph.

First Day of Spring

Saturday was officially the first day of Spring.

It rained solidly all day.

This is Grange Road South taken with my camera-phone while I stood waiting for the bus home.

See the view in the opposite direction on Hyde Daily Photo.

Wood End Farm

This is the top of Captain Clarke's bridge over the Peak Forest Canal.

On the left the towpath leads back down to the canal having passed under and over the bridge.

Beyond the bridge a private road leads to Wood End Farm.

The full-colour version of this monochromed shot can be seen on Geograph.

A view of the canal from the right-hand side of the bridge can be seen on sithenah.

The bridge itself can be seen on Hyde Daily Photo.

Sunshine Award

Renee of Rochester Daily Photo sent the Sunshine Award to Hyde Daily Photo.

As I said in a post on my personal blog in February 2008
I have something of an ambivalent attitude towards memes and awards in blogland.

They seem to come along in droves at times and like pyramid selling and chain letters perpetuate themselves by encouraging recipients to pass them on to several others.
Nonetheless it is nice to get a little award from time to time and provided it is well meant and sent with some thought, then it would seem churlish not to accept. I've decided to place the details here and will mention it on HDP tomorrow.

The rules for accepting this award are
  • Put the logo on your blog or within your post.
  • Pass the award onto 12 bloggers.
  • Link the nominees within your post.
  • Let the nominees know they have received this award by commenting on their blog.
  • Share the love and link to the person from whom you received this award..
I wish to make it clear that so far as I am concerned, the rules (in particular the passing-on rule) are optional.

The twelve blogs I've chosen to pass the award on to are ones that I enjoy visiting but perhaps pass under the radar of some of my regular readers. They are:I recommend my regulars to give them a visit.

East from Windy Harbour

Last week I showed you the view North from Windy Harbour viewpoint.

This is the view East. {Do click on the photograph to see it full size.}

In the background are the Pennine Hills above the Longdendale Valley leading over the Woodhead Pass to Yorkshire.

End of Station Road, Godley

These are the Godley Arches over the A57 on the East side of Hyde viewed from the end of Station Road.

To the left, on the embankment, is the new Godley station and the entrance for Manchester-bound trains.

The entrance for Glossop-bound trains is on the other side of the arches.

The new Godley Station replaced the now closed and disappeared Godley East Station, aka Godley Junction which lies another half mile down Station Road.

The railway line carries trains from Manchester Piccadilly to Glossop, but at one time it went all the way to Sheffield via the Woodhead Tunnel. Nowadays at Dinting Junction all that is left of that old route is a short spur to Hadfield.

See a closer view of the arches on Hyde Daily Photo.

Windy Harbour Plinth

This plinth at Windy Harbour on Werneth Low was donated by the Automobile Association and erected in 1986. It is dedicated to W Shelmerdine (1912-1982) about whom I have no information. An additional dedication has been added to J E Shelmerdine (1916-1996). Jane was one of the victims of Harold Shipman.

The plinth is a toposcope showing the distance to the various landmarks visible from the viewpoint.

You can see the view over the top of the plinth on Hyde Daily Photo.
