New Sign for Jolly Carter

The Jolly Carter has just had a makeover and you can see the result on Hyde Daily Photo.

It has also got a new sign.

Personally I think I prefer the old sign.

End of an Era

I reported at the end of May that Hyde Mill was due to be demolished.

The process has now begun. The first thing to go has been the iconic Hyde Mill Tower. I was passing yesterday in a taxi and managed to get a couple of photographs through the window.

The other one can be viewed on Hyde Daily Photo.

Matthew & Mark

Most of the stained glass windows of St George's Church were destroyed by or removed after a WWII bomb that exploded nearby.

Four windows on the South side of the church have now been restored. Matthew and Mark were re-instated about six years ago and now the windows celebrating Luke and John have also been installed.

Photos of the other two windows can be viewed on Hyde Daily Photo.

There are plans eventually to restore the original East window which can be seen on Old Hyde.

09:09 09/09/09

Hyde Town Hall clock at 09:09 on 09/09/09.

For a less close view see Hyde Daily Photo.

For a more distant shot see Geograph.

I'm not normally out and about at this hour as I can't use my travel-pass until 9.30 am weekdays. However I was up early and it was nice weather so I walked down into town and took two shots at the bewitching moment.

Some people are supposedly including the seconds but that assumes the clock photographed is set to the right time and the camera's EXIF date is absolutely accurate. It seems the EXIF data on my camera is inaccurate by about ten minutes, in addition to being set to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) rather than the current BST (British Summer Time).

I went down to the bus station and tried to catch the 9.30 346 bus, but it was running two minutes early and the driver wouldn't let me on if I didn't pay 80p so I waited for the 9.35 389 instead!

Booth, Ince & Knowles

The offices of solicitors Booth, Ince & Knowles (established 1872) are on Market Street.

I'm not sure where the original offices of Thornley & Booth (as they were then known) were located, but they suffered badly in the Big Flood of 1906 - see Old Hyde today.
