War Memorial, Victoria Street, Newton, Hyde

Victoria Street War Memorial on the corner with Cartwright Street is surrounded by wrought iron railings. The inscription on the plinth reads:
1914 - 1919

ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS
OF VICTORIA STREET AND
DISTRICT,
IN HONOUR OF THE MEN
WHO ANSWERED THEIR
COUNTRY'S CALL.

A full list of the names inscribed can be found at Carl's Cam

The bronze statue of a soldier on the top is a replica, added in 2005, to replace the often vandalised original.

A contribution to The Weekend in Black and White.

  1. It reminds me a bit of the South African War memorial here in one of our parks.

  2. The original is in Hyde Town Hall, on the landing at the top of the stairs facing the front door.

  3. I've never been able to understand why anyone would want to vandalise a war memorial - it doesn't glorify war, just acknowledges the men who died. They should never be forgotten. A very moving picture.
