No more winners at the Astoria
The Astoria Bingo Hall closed down in 2010 and the building is looking the worse for wear with buddleia growing out of the wall and the signage starting to go. It was originally a cinema called "La Scala" and was also used for a time as a dance hall.
See how it looked when still open in 2007 on Hyde Daily Photo Vol.1.
Here is how it looks now from the bus station entrance.

The sign is so new compared to the old building.
ReplyDeleteMy SIGNS, SIGNS
this is the first building you see on arrival at Hyde Bus Station, and it's a disgrace to the town.
ReplyDeleteA nice photo of a disappearing piece of history. It's too bad they didn't do something to keep the doors open. Maybe it cost too much to restore.
ReplyDeleteIt may be past the point of no return.
ReplyDeletewhat a cool sight
ReplyDeleteWell...I like the white washed brick!
ReplyDeleteIt looks rough with the paint peeling off like that.
ReplyDeleteI would have thought it sad that this once grand dance hall had been reduced to becoming a bingo hall, but even that would have been better than what has befallen it now.
ReplyDeleteWith a name like Astoria, I though this was going to be a horse race track. This is certainly a sign of times gone by.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when it stopped being a Cinema?
