Grazing Horses

The reason for the stile and barrier under the railway bridge I posted here yesterday is that it prevents the straying of the horses grazing on this field by the Peak Forest Canal.

Shadow Sunday:Freight Train Crossing

Crossing this bridge is a Freightliner train heading South from Manchester towards Woodley and beyond.

Access under the bridge from this field is via a stile.

You can view it from the other side and follow where the footpath leads on Hyde Daily Photo.

Notice how the sun casts the shadow of trees on the retaining wall.

Hallbottom Gate Inn 2010

These images of the Hallbottom Gate Inn on Talbot Road, Newton were taken this week by Tom Wigley and are used here with kind permission.


The pub has seen a large turnover of landlords in the last 25 years and is now closed, derelict inside and expected to be demolished.


In the 90s it was a popular venue for classic rock groups and in June 1990 was host to the American band Par Avion. Photos of the inside of the pub taken at their gig and showing the cheering fans can be found on Old Hyde.

View from Wood End Allotments

This view (taken a few months ago) is from Woodend Lane looking across through the seemingly now derelict allotment site towards Gower Road across the valley of the Gower Hey Brook.

At the Bottom of Church Brow Steps

On Hyde Daily Photo I have posted the first photograph of a six day walk that begins at the steps leading down to Church Brow.

Here is what I found on guard at the bottom of the steps.

A Walk down Pudding Lane:Hattersley to Longlands

Pudding Lane is an old route between Mottram and Godley. At Hattersley it was preserved as a walkway when the Manchester overspill estate was built in the 1950s.

Here between Wardle Brook Avenue and Hattersley Road West the houses are built without individual road access as car ownership was low at that time.


The estate has seen many improvements in recent years with much of the older stock of houses being demolished.


Also now demolished is Harehills Primary School which closed in 2002. Its site was on the left of the fence.


Past the school the lane leads into an old wood.


On the left are some large private houses.


Eventually the lane leads to the modern A57 Mottram Road at Longlands Lodge.

Railway Remnants

This pit is all that remains of the railway turntable at the Godley Junction yards.

Nearby is what was probably part of a railway workshop.

The "Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC)" route from Godley Junction to Apethorn opened in 1866. Following the electrification of the Woodhead line in 1954 and until 1981 when the through route to Sheffield closed, Godley was where trains to and from the Liverpool district changed from diesel or steam to electric traction. The main traffic on the line consisted of trains from the Yorkshire coalfield to the Fiddlers Ferry power station.

St George's Burial Ground

At the side of St George's Church the land slopes steeply into the valley of Gower Hey Brook.

It looks as though it has taken part of the church burial ground with it.

The Clock on the George

The George on Great Norbury Street is being converted into a private house as can be seen on Hyde Daily Photo.

At present its distinctive clock remains in situ.

Edith testing the depth

Several weeks ago I showed the view of the Peak Forest Canal looking North from bridge #8 on Hyde Daily Photo.

This is that view just a few weeks ago with the narrowboat "Edith" passing under. The poles you can see are used to test the depth of the water.
