Rainy Saturday on Hyde Market

This is the view across Hyde Market from the shelter of greengrocer's Strawberry Gardens last Saturday morning. The Northern half of the market ground has been cleared in the first phase of the renewal of Hyde Market. Trading was as busy as ever on the Southern half.

Compare this with the scene from the opposite direction the day after on a sunny Sunday afteroon on Hyde Daily Photo.

The next Saturday, Strawberry Gardens was closed and there was no market at all as the BNP had hijacked Hyde for a rally and a march with the EDL. Whilst many shops on Market Street closed for the day, the Clarendon Shopping Centre was open for business almost as usual. Some businesses closed after lunch, not so much on account of the presence of the political gatherings but because regular shoppers decided to stay away from possible trouble.
