The Tunnel

This short tunnel connects Johnsonbrook Road to Junction Street.

It passes under two railway lines, the electrified line (notice the gantry above) from Glossop via Flowery Field and the line from Rose Hill via Hyde North to Manchester Piccadilly. The two lines merge just to the North of Hyde North station.

A closer view of the inside of the tunnel looking from Junction Street towards Johnsonbrook Road can be seen on Hyde Daily Photo.

Final Days for Hyde Mill

The demolition of Hyde Mill started in September 2009.

Now very little remains.

A closer view can be seen on Hyde Daily Photo.

Skywatching Gower Road

This was taken three days before Christmas, looking from Dowson Road across to the top of Gower Road about three quarters of an hour after sunrise.

You can read about my adventurous journey through the snow that day on Ackworth born, gone West.

You can see how the whole of Gower Road looked on Christmas Day at noon on Hyde Daily Photo.

Trolley on Ice

The ice on the surface of the Peak Forest Canal is thick enough to support the weight of a supermarket trolly and several house bricks.

When it melts, as it surely will, the trolley will sink and join who-knows-what-else lurking below the surface.

The ice has already melted around the Manchester Road bridge as you can see on Hyde Daily Photo.

Snow Piles on Hyde Market

It takes more than a bit of snow to put off the traders and shoppers on Hyde Market.

The children's carousel may be boarded up but the other traders have been busy clearing the snow into piles so the shoppers can still get around.

Another photograph from the opposite direction can be seen on Hyde Daily Photo.

Crown Pole, August 2009

Looking across Market Street to the Royal Bank of Scotland and Corporation Street.

In the centre is the Crown Pole erected in 2002 to commemorate the Queen's golden jubilee.

See it shortly after erection on Old Hyde

See how it looked in January 2nd 2010 on Hyde Daily Photo.

Slippery Slope

The slope that leads from the Swains Valley to the Trans Pennine Trail is currently extremely slippery.

This was taken a little while ago before a whole heap of snow deposited itself on top of the ice.

Werneth Winter Walk

There seems to be a growing number of Hyde-related videos available on YouTube so I'm going to be posting some of them here.

This one by BenjaminBBS is of a walk over Werneth Low taken on January 5th 2009.

Down Market Street

This was the scene down Market Street on the first Saturday in January around 9.45 a.m. Hyde Market is on the right and Wilkinsons (previously KwikSave and before that the Co-op) is across the road on the corner of Greenfield Street.

Overnight there had been a sharp frost and fresh snow started falling around 8.30 a.m. so by the time people went out to start shopping even the main roads were affected. The snow had stopped briefly which was when I took this and some other photographs. It soon started snowing again though and continued most of the day.

By lunch time though the gritters had been out, the main roads were passable and the market ground was awash with salty slush.

The next photograph I took was looking up Market Street from the middle of the road by the bollard you can see. That photograph is on Hyde Daily Photo now.

Garside Street on New Year's Day

A week ago on Christmas Day, Garside Street was thick with ice on top of snow creating frozen slush.

See the slush on Hyde Daily Photograph or the full picture on Geograph.

The snow at Christmas had thawed and only a few patches of compacted ice remained, but a sharp frost followed by fresh snow on New Year's morning led to a return of icy conditions.

Edit 12:30 pm, Jan 2nd. Snow started falling just before 9am and is still falling so it is white-out again now.
