The bottom end of Market Street
At the bottom end of Market Street is the entrance to the bus station.
##17-19 Market Street was occupied by Waterways Bathrooms but the company was dissolved in March 2014 and the premises are now empty.
#21 was the surgery of Dr Harold Shipman. Following his conviction it remained empty for some years before being occupied by Oakland Domestic Appliances but they have since moved up the street to premises previously occupied by Ethel Austin, leaving #21 unoccupied again.
#23 was the Co-operative Pharmacy but the Co-operative Pharmacy Group, the third largest pharmacy chain in the UK, was sold for £620m in October 2014 to Bestway who have re-branded the pharmacies as "Well Pharmacy".
In the early 1960s #25 Market Stret was the temporary home of Martin's Bank but since then it has been Harrison's newsagents.
#27 is Lloyds Pharmacy, one of three pharmacies on Market Street.

Godley/Hyde Township Boundary Stone
This boundary stone between the Townships of Godley and Hyde stands in front of the wall of 196 Mottram Road.
It is similar to the Werneth/Bredbury boundary stone and the Hyde/Werneth boundary stone.

Tracks among the buttercups
Hyde College on Stockport Road, Gee Cross opened around 1960. It later became part of Tameside College and was closed in July 2007. Having been in mothballs for many years the site is now being sold in order to help fund a super college in Ashton under Lyne and despite being on Green Belt land a planning application has been made for an estate of 40 houses to be built on the site.
Something has been making large tracks among the buttercups that grow in the grounds.

Bye Bye B&Q
B&Q has now moved out of their Hyde branch. The remaining signs urge customers to visit them at their bigger stores in Ashton (5 miles away) and Stockport (7.5 miles away) - OK if you have a car - neither store is very accessible using public transport.
Aldi also used to be here until they moved to new premises just down the road. Their old premises were briefly occupied in 2011 by Pound Empire Xtra.
All that is left here now is £-pound stretcher extra. When £-stretcher took over the former Woolworths in 2009 it was expected that they'd soon close their shop next to B&Q but they didn't and so still maintain a double presence in the town.
A number of former B&Q stores are being turned into Screwfix stores. Both are owned by the Kingfisher group. One rumour is that Primark are interested in the site. Other rumours are purely wide speculation.

Hyde 7 mile road race
Market Street was closed yesterday for the Hyde 7 mile road race. Two pace setters in blue and yellow shirts led the start of the race. This was the third event of the Tour of Tameside. It followed a 6 mile Fell run on Friday and and a Half Marathon on Saturday.
Some 333 runners completed the event. Starting outside Hyde Town Hall this 7 mile road race goes straight up Market Street before turning left onto Mottram Old Road and past the Ken Ward Leisure Centre in Hattersley and left onto Mottram Road; then Grange Road North near Hyde United and past Hyde Leisure Pool and up Lumn Road before turning back onto Market Street and down to the finish outside Hyde Town Hall.
Here we see the runners starting to string out as they pass the end of Dowson Road.
These were the runners at the back of the pack. You can see the start/finish point at the bottom of Market Street. I didn't stay to watch them return. The winner was Mohammad Aburezeq of Altrincham and District AC in a time of 35:32 minutes while the last to finish took 1 hour 44 minutes,
You can find the full results of the race at runbritain.

No Bridge at Over Yonder
This is the Peak Forest Canal at Over Yonder looking across towards the Adamson Industrial Estate. I showed you the view around here from a boat on the canal in May 2015.
If you see how it looked in 2007 on Hyde Daily Photo Vol.1 you'll discover that there used to be a footbridge across the canal here.
It was declared unsafe in 2006 but neither Adamson's, the local council nor British Waterways could agree on who was responsible for the repairs and nothing was done apart from blocking off the access. Now it has been removed completely.
See this blocked off section by the towpath in 2011 on Geograph.
See the bridge from the opposite direction in this post from April 2011.

Walkers & Dogs Welcome at the Buxton
The Buxton Inn on Mottram Old Road, Gee Cross has seen a lot of changes over the years. Currently it seems to be doing fairly well and the new signage declares "Walkers & Dogs Welcome".

You'll find plenty of it on Hyde Market and it won't cost you a fortune.
